Have you guys seen this? Glen Keane draws in virtual reality.

Maybe some of you guys have seen this. I thought some of his words is related to what we have been taught in Acting Introduction class about facial acting.

Some of my faves were:
"An artist spirit is that freedom and fearlessness of being a child.

"My dad was a kid, a big kid. "

"The key to doing those drawings was asking myself; How do I feel? (Empathy?) That's the thing you are gonna hang on to."

Enjoy,

Francis

2nd Times_Staging & Main Poses_Francis.

 09/12/15 (Updated)

I did not feel the line of actions. So I drew some simple gestures, to see them better while acting it out on the mirror.  I added a brick background, to give it a try. I thought, it's simpler instead of outdoor scene. Which one do you guys think it's better, the second one or the previous video? Thank you.

Hello, class. I have been working on sum of five poses today. I am aiming to nail Victor's notes from last night.

On pose one and two, I am planning to put some darts. Should I skip the dart on the first pose?
I am not sure for the number four pose (fr80). I simplified the body at that frame but he must do something tho. Any suggestion?
What do you guys think about the dart position now? I like Janel's idea about hiding the dart at the start. Thank's Janel! :)

What do you guys think if I change  into more casual background setting (on the beach) instead of a bar? That's why I change the pants into short. But here's my problem, there's no way to make the character have  short sleeves.

Thank you

Video/Reel Review Tools

Came across a couple of neat sites that I thought I'd share with the class

First one is Anilyzer, which lets you input a youtube or vimeo link and frame through it, and you can also watch a slowed down version. Nice for doing a quick anaylsis of video reference. Can't scrub unfortunately.

http://anilyzer.com/

The other site is Reeview It, which is a reel review service (which seems kinda neat) but they've just released their player for free. It's similar to Anilyzer in that you can just paste a link and go, no uploading needed.

Additionally you can do drawovers! It's similar to SyncSketch in that respect, and it lets you hold drawings for 10, 20, 30 frames, which is something I wish SyncSketch would let you do. Doesn't look like there's an easy way to save/share drawings which is a bit of a bummer. Also sadly no scrubbing, audio or visual.

https://www.reeview.it/player

Looks like SyncSketch is still the best of these sorts of sites for now, but these other sites have a few features that I thought were neat.

Oh and also, I tested it last night and Sync Sketch audio scrub worked for me on Chrome, so if the class computer has Chrome it might be worth trying again next week, Victor?

Alternate Animation Clip - Michael

Hi Victor,

I wanted to hear your thoughts on this clip I had done a while back using the same audio clip about National Security. If you still think it needs a major overhaul like the last one I understand and we can just start a new idea after we finish the one we are working on now.

Thank you for taking the time to look at it!

This is still very much in "WIP" but with most of the notes addressed from Wednesday I wanted to see how people are feeling with the changes.

Thanks,

Orphan Black

Hey guys! I mentioned briefly at the end of class last night that the TV show Orphan Black has some interesting acting in it, so I thought I'd share some videos about how the show is made, hopefully you guys find this stuff as interesting as I do!

So, Orphan Black is a show about a group of female clones, all played by the same actress. They don't discover that they're clones until they're adults, so each woman has grown up in a different part of the world, under different circumstances, etc. This gives the actress, Tatiana Maslany, the chance to differentiate each woman (specificity!) in terms of accent, body language, hair, makeup, etc. So she's using the same "rig" as it were, to portray a number of different characters (I think she plays six characters in season 1, more as the show goes on).

Here's a little scene of a bunch of the clones talking to each other on the phone, you can see even here how different she plays each of them.

Where it gets really interesting is when she plays clones in the same scene. There's a very technical side to it, she doesn't get to really act in an organic way like a normal actor (something closer to how animators often have to think about things) Here are a couple videos explaining how she has to shoot those scenes.

There are certainly actors who could portray these differing characters but I think the technical underbelly to all of this is what makes her so intriguing as an actress. The way she has to act in the scenes alone and also worry about where her eyelines are, her staging, blocking, etc is of extra interest to us animators.

In a later episode they did a dance scene with four clones and one other non-clone character, which has some very strategic staging/flow to make everything feel natural.

And here's an explainer of how they did it:

I'll probably end up writing this post up again on my own personal blog since I think it's a neat thing for animators to pick apart but for now I hope you guys enjoy!

Maya Rig List

Saw this on Facebook and thought I'd share with you guys. There are a couple rigs on there I didn't know about! Not sure about the quality of them all but worth a share, I figured.

See you guys tonight!

Janel's Audio Options

Hey guys! I'm planning on doing a 2 person dialogue for the next assignment (go big or go home, right? Heh.)

I've got three options (all from Mad Men, which I just finished watching and has some of the most brilliant moments of acting/writing I think I've seen on TV). If you think it's too much Mad Men, I've got some other options but I think these three all have good potential.

#3

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5833592/AnimC/Dialogue%20Options/3.wav

I think you'll have to download them to listen (blogger doesn't seem to like audio files). I'm leaning towards 2 or maybe 3 right now, I think they have the strongest contrast between the two characters and I already have ideas about how I'd like to stage them. But 1 could be fun too. Let me know what you think! Thanks guys.
